FACC among the finalists of the JEC Composites Innovation Awards 2025

At JEC World 2025 in Paris, the leading trade fair for the composites industry, FACC AG was presented as one of the top 3 finalists of the JEC Composites Innovation Awards together with Competence Center CHASE GmbH on March 4. An innovative wing profile for aircraft turbines made of thermoplastic composites was submitted.

The renowned industry award, which is presented annually, recognizes projects and technological innovations that demonstrate the full potential of high-tech lightweight materials. Such as the wing profile for aircraft engines developed by FACC together with Competence Center CHASE GmbH and other partners, which was constructed from thermoplastic composite materials. These new materials have great potential for the next generation of aircraft - their reusability is also currently being researched. In the run-up to JEC World 2025 in Paris, a top-class jury of experts selected the Austrian entry among the top 3 finalists of the JEC Composites Innovation Awards.

"Together with its customers and partners, FACC develops lightweight materials for the aviation of tomorrow. Thermoplastic composites will play a major role in the future – the nomination for the JEC Composites Innovation Awards confirms our excellent work in this area," says FACC CEO Robert Machtlinger.

Nomination for innovative turbine element

The innovation is the result of several years of research. The optimized turbine blade element is currently made of aluminum; the realization of the component using thermoplastic injection molding and forming technologies ensures a further significant weight reduction compared to aluminum materials while maintaining the same rigidity. Thanks to the advanced manufacturing process and an efficient, automated process chain, a high production rate is also possible. The wing profiles can thus be used in a wide range of aircraft engines and the technology can be adapted to different component types.

Technology developments with enormous potential

The market potential of products made of high-performance composites is enormous: the growing demand for global mobility requires such innovations to reduce the environmental impact of the industry. The use of composites in aircraft engine architectures is instrumental in reducing weight and increasing efficiency, thereby supporting efforts to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability goals. The design of intelligent products, technologies and processes is also crucial for future competitiveness. The synergy of FACC AG with Competence Center CHASE GmbH and its other partner companies is an excellent example of a successful interaction between industry and science.

Further research activities in the field of thermoplastic fiber composites

As part of its strategy to establish a high-performance and high-rate production process in the aerospace industry, FACC AG already joined the international TPRC consortium in 2021: In the ThermoPlastic composites Research Center, FACC AG joins forces in the research of thermoplastic composites with major international aerospace companies.

In cooperation with 13 leading European partners, FACC is also researching the reprocessing of thermoplastic materials into high-quality second-life components as part of the COMPASS project. With the help of digital technologies, this is a significant step towards sustainability and circular economy.
